Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Associate in Sustainable Chemical Engineering

Organization: KU Leuven
Location: Leuven, Belgium
Duration: three-years
Pay/Volunteer: salary package will be in salary scale 44 - postdoctoral assistant (Salary academic staff (AP) – HR Department) and is based on your postdoctoral experience
Deadline: January 10, 2022
Description: Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Associate at the Department of Chemical Engineering of KU Leuven. The position will be embedded in the Department’s Process and Environmental Technology Lab (PETLab), which is located at KU Leuven’s Engineering Technology Campus De Nayer in Sint-Katelijne-Waver (Belgium). The research of PETLab is situated in the domain of resource recovery from waste(water), biomass and side streams. Examples of areas include advanced (waste)water treatment, mixed-culture microbial processes and the production of renewable chemicals by thermal, chemical and biochemical conversion techniques. It is the core competence of PETLab to design, optimize, monitor and control the aforementioned processes to the benefit of the end-users. As such, research at PETLab is strongly technology oriented.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will both be assigned research and teaching duties, split approximately 70/30.

The research work will be oriented towards the design and application of nano-functionalized (catalytic) materials in both chemical (e.g., photocatalysis) and biological (e.g., anaerobic digestion) water and waste treatment. The selected candidate will support and further expand the on-going research line in this field, and will be required to work independently and as part of a team, as well as be able to perform suitable experimental and modelling activities to progress the research. Attracting external funding through assisting in competitive proposal writing (together with the PIs involved) is an essential part of the job.

Teaching duties will include guiding bachelor, master and doctoral students, teaching chemical (engineering) courses (ex-cathedra, exercises, lab sessions) such as analytical chemistry for engineers, mass and heat transfer phenomena and sustainable process engineering. It is important that the selected candidate will be willing and able to teach widely across the Chemical Engineering courses included in the curriculum of Chemical Engineering Technology at KU Leuven.
