Description: Understanding the associations and mechanisms linking heat exposure to anxiety and depression in Indonesia

This PhD project offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the mental health consequences of climate-related heat exposure in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable settings. Rising temperatures and more frequent extreme heat events are emerging as major environmental stressors, yet their impacts on mental health, particularly anxiety and depression, remain insufficiently understood, especially outside high-income countries and among socially and economically disadvantaged populations.

Indonesia provides a compelling context for this research. With an average annual temperature of approximately 27°C and a near doubling of excessive heat stress days from 10 to 18 days per year over recent decades, combined with rapid urbanisation and marked social and economic inequalities, the country faces substantial and uneven exposure to heat-related risks.
