Traveling To, From, and around Work

Encourage Biking

Riding a bike can save up to 138g CO2 per km and that up to 30% of car trips in cities could be replaced by bike rides

  • Have lots of good safe bike parking
  • Have bike emergency kits available
  • Have showers and lockers available
  • Have a bike/scooter sharing/rental scheme
  • Have bike maintenance courses and bike maintenance/repair workshop available
  • Arrange second-hand bike sales
  • Educate on safe biking
  • Have a help-to-buy bike scheme
** Sometimes these can have tax benefits. Some employers are allowed to loan the bike purchasing money or lease the bike to the employee, and the expenses are deducted off their salary. Because the costs are deducted, it can mean lower social security and lower income taxes. In Germany, this scheme is Jobrad.

Encourage Public Transit

  • Have a shuttle that runs between the campus and the nearest subway stop.
  • Have a bike locker with shared bikes at the subway station to allow students/workers to bike to campus.
  • Have public transit instructions in your onboarding manual.

Cars

  • Make the department vehicle electric, plug-in hybrid or hybrid

  • Have charging stations available on campus
** If it isn’t possible to be free, then partner with private company that can provide charging at a fee to users.

  • Hook charging stations to the solar grid. Most people will be charging during the day.

  • Arrange car sharing
