Fluorinated oils
Fluorinated oils used for droplet-production can have extremely high global-warming potentials (GWP). This means that when these get into the atmosphere, they remain stable for a very long time AND absorb large amounts of heat, leading to warming of the atmosphere. Both of these factors are important to understand how much of an impact a substance will have, eg methane absorbs a lot of hear but breaks down quickly. GWP is measured in comparison to the warming caused by the same mass of CO2.
FC-40 has a GWP of >6000 (see report from the EPA here), which means that per gram of FC-40 released into the atmosphere, it will cause the same amount of warming as >6000 grams of CO2.
Novec has a significantly lower GWP but is more toxic.
We recommend reassessing your workflow to ensure that you’re only using the minimum necessary amount of these oils, and that they can be disposed of carefully.
