Choose Green Energy Sources
Decomission Coal Boilers
Install combined heat and power turbines
Switch to solar, wind, geothermal
Example: Cornell University, Cost $43M USD, annual savings $7.3M USD
- Included optimized building controls (minimize ventilation air, minimize re-heat, minimize air humidification or dehumidification, recommisioned of degraded systems) and LED lighting.
Solar Power Energy Generation
Roof space can be used for solar panels to harness energy.
Photovoltaic power generation onsite also provides a bonus benefit of providing energy in times of emergency to keep fridges, freezers and servers operational.
There are often governmental grants and subsidies to help offset the cost. If the cost is a factor, consider a loan or private-company partnerships. Loans can be paid off through the energy savings the system generates. There are sometimes low or no-interest loans available from the government or energy provider to encourage these projects. There are also private companies that will install solar panels, and provide the electricity for a fee to you. The infrastructure and maintenance belongs to the private company, but the bill may be lower than buying electricity off the normal grid. Another option is bond issuance to raise money for the project. These can be public or for employees only. Again, the coupon payments are paid off through the savings generated from the project.
Examples of on-campus solar power generation:
Harvard University MGHPCC Data Center
University of Southern California
Max Planck Institutes
