Disinfection

Biological safety cabinets (BSC) should be switched off when not in use to conserve energy. These cabinets consume a significant amount of energy, roughly equivalent to half the energy usage of a typical house in a day. It is important to also power off any small appliances used inside fume hoods or BSC when they are not actively being used. If UV light is utilized for decontamination purposes, it is recommended to install a timer and run it only when the laboratory is unoccupied to prevent UV damage to staff. Prolonged exposure to UV light can degrade products, so it is considered best practice to run the UV decontamination process for 30 minutes, as this is typically sufficient to effectively decontaminate the cabinet. In most cases, UV decontamination is not necessary (source 1, source 2). Instead of using the UV light disinfection, change to ethanol wipe down
