Description:
This introductory workshop is designed to give the attendees a comprehensive understanding of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a key methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts of products, processes, and systems. LCA provides a structured approach, widely used in research and industry, to analyse sustainability and understand the environmental implications and potential trade-offs of different design and operational choices.
Throughout the workshop, participants will explore the theoretical foundations of LCA and its four main stages: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation of results. The workshop will combine theoretical insights with practical case studies. No prior experience with LCA is required, even though a background in environmental sciences or engineering may be helpful.
By the end of the workshop, attendees will:
- Understand the fundamental stages of LCA, according to the ISO standards 14040-44 (2006), and how they relate to assessing environmental impacts.
- Gain familiarity with LCA tools and software commonly used in academic and professional settings.
- Explore case studies across various fields to see LCA in action and learn how to interpret results critically.
- Receive guidance on integrating LCA methodologies into their own research projects.
This workshop is ideal for PhD students, especially those who want to deepen their understanding of rigorous environmental assessment methods and to build foundational skills in sustainability assessment and environmental impact analysis.
